Being the country’s premiere university, University of the Philippines website was hacked by alleged Chinese hackers last April 20 – Friday. The website was defaced by a South China Sea map higlighting the disputed Scarborough Shoal (Panatag Shoal in Filipino) with a caption “We come from China! Huangyan Island is Ours”.
After the UP website was hacked, other government websites such as the Official Gazette, the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office, the Presidential Museum and Library, and the Department of Budget and Management were also briefly hacked.
In addition, UP and government officials asked the media not to over-sensationalized this issue. However, as a reataliation, some UP students also hacked some Chinese websites.
Is this the start of a cyberwar between China and the Philippines?
